Volunteering at the food bank

One of the best things that  we have added to our schedule this year is a monthly volunteer day at ur local food bank.

We’ve been there three times now.  Twice we have sorted salvage from a local distributor and today we bagged rice and beans into smaller bags, then boxed and stacked them. One thing I love is that the kids take a moment to find out what we are working on for the day and then choose a job and get to work.  And they really work!  It’s a great way for them to help make a change in the world.

Some other volunteer ideas for your family:

  • soup kitchen
  • food bank
  • library
  • animal shelter
  • sports events- our local community has a lot of sport events that volunteers are needed for.
  • local festivals- holiday, fundraisers, etc.
  • local animal rescues
  • BLM or animal reserves.

And I am sure there are many more.  We have found that at first some organizations are unsure of having  a large group of children, and young children volunteer, but we are usually able to work with them to make something doable.  I also suggest asking for other recommendations if an organization isn’t able to accommodate your group, they may know of an organization that would be able to work with you.
